Comparing "Trap/Mumble Rap" to 90's hip-hop
For some background here, my weightlifting gym plays a ton of "Trap" hip-hop and mumble-rap on their Spotify playlist. Obviously this is just my own opinion on it, but I find it extremely uncreative, often lethargic rapping, same background beats over and over, and often just plain unpleasant, boring and repetitive lyrics. I find the majority of it to just be garbage compared to the stuff I grew up on as a teenager - NWA, Dre/Snoop/Tupac West Coast stuff, Biggie, Nas, Wu-Tang etc. Sure, the lyrics back then used a lot of the same themes and use of, shall we say, certain words. But the beats, melodies, rhymes and flows were much more creative, crisp and often took on heavy social issues as well, which to me has always been part of the attraction to hip-hop.
So as an old, cranky guy in his 40s I am having a hard time appreciating what this style of hip-hop has to offer. I do like some Kendrick Lamar for example. I see that one of the rules here is to "not ask for recommendations", but I am trying to figure out how to appreciate and enjoy the hip-hop that seems to be most popular nowadays without coming across as one of those obnoxious "back in my day types.
