About the Film
Monsters and Men is a triptych of interlocking stories set against the backdrop of a tight-knit Brooklyn neighborhood, fractured by the fatal shooting of an unarmed Black man at the hands of police.
What begins as a single, unthinkable moment radiates outward through the lives of three people who witnessed it — each of them carrying a different version of the same truth. Written and directed with uncommon restraint by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the film refuses easy answers. It does not tell you who the monsters are. It asks you to look closely — at the men, at the systems, at the small silences that make larger tragedies possible — and then to decide what you would have done.
Shot on location in Brooklyn with a cast of extraordinary depth, Monsters and Men premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Award for Outstanding First Feature. It went on to become one of the most discussed American dramas of its year — a film that feels less like a story and more like a mirror.
The Structure
