Losing my insurance in a few months - is it technically legal for my psychiatrist to prescribe me 60 pills instead of my regular 30 for the next few months, so I can stockpile the extra (while paying the same $10 copay) to buy myself some time while I figure out how to afford them?
I’m about to turn 26 in three months and have really been stressed about how I’m going to afford health insurance or my medications. I’ve been seeing the same psychiatrist for over a year now (but have been prescribed stimulants for several years) and have a good relationship with her. I’m prescribed 30 pills of 30 mg adderall xr and 30 pills of 5 mg adderall instant release each month, and have never had an issue with running out early.
Do you think she would be open to prescribing 60 pills of each of the prescriptions instead of 30 pills for the next few months, until I lose my insurance? Right now my prescriptions are $10 each and I’m pretty sure my copay is the same regardless of how many pills I pick up, so I would be saving literally hundreds if not thousands of dollars in the next 3 months by doubling the number of pills.
Sorry if this sounds dumb I’m just feeling a little panicked right now 😅 Is this something a psychiatrist might do if they had a good relationship with the patient and trusted them? I would feel much more comfortable having a 3 month supply to ration rather than a complete drop as soon as I lose my insurance
