Adopting a baby born addicted to drugs

My husband and I welcomed our son last year at 32 weeks and he subsequently had to spend time in the NICU until he was able to eat and breath on his own. The NICU nurses were wonderful and our son left 100% healthy! But during our stay, I encountered something that has stuck with me ever since. I met several moms who were addicted to heroin and their babies were admitted to the NICU immediately after delivery to endure withdrawal. Living on the north side of Indianapolis, I had no idea how common this actually was but a nurse told me half the babies in the NICU at the time my son was there were there because of withdrawal. My son turns 1 next weekend and the babies I witnessed still weigh heavy on my heart. They were so little and in so much pain- it was surreal. Having another child is risky for me personally, but I’d really like to have another. Adoption is something we’re considering and I can’t stop thinking about the babies in the NICU who didn’t get a fair start in life. Im curious if there are any folks out there that can share their perspective regarding adoption when addiction is involved. Thanks in advance
