Lots of my coworkers are skipping breaks and lunches in the docks
I live in a state that requires you to take two paid rest breaks and an unpaid lunch break for a 10 hour shift. They can’t be waived for any reason. Anyways, I was grabbing a bottle of Propel out of my lunchbox in my cubby (yes we have cubbies in the dock), when a problem solver came up to me.
The problem solver asked why I was drinking something when it wasn’t break time. I told him I was thirsty. This problem solver is about 75 years old, and started complaining about how this next generation is “lazy”, and how he skips his breaks and he doesn’t even use the bathroom until lunch break. He points out a CPT chaser who has a reputation for doing more than what he’s required, and said “see him? He never takes his breaks or his lunches. He’s a very hard worker, and he never click click clicks on his phone like you young kids do. I leave my phone in my car,”.
I told him he really should mind his own business, and also mentioned that Amazon could get fined if people continue to skip their breaks. He said that about half of the dock skips breaks or lunch to help with the backlog, and even stay till 9 pm. I told him I have a life outside of work, and he interrupted me and said “yes but what comes first? Your job or your family,”. I told him my family always comes first as I know this job could replace anyone who goes negative by one minute on UPT, and he muttered how people are so ungrateful.
Karma hit him after work. His car got broken into.
