Film camera keeps triggering TSA hand check- is there a way to prevent this?

I like traveling with my film camera and always have it hand checked so that it doesn't have to pass through the x-ray, but it keeps triggering the swab thing. Is there a way to prevent this? Something I can clean my camera and/or the case with? They ended up taking my camera, which had a film roll in it, and passing it through one of the new CT scanner today. I'm traveling for two weeks and going through several American airports and I'm scared all my stuff will get damaged.
