Why is there Fruit along the side of highways?

Hey everyone, got a question about rural highways, moved to the country several months ago and I've been seeing along the highways and major roads yellow fruits/vegetables strewn along the sides, just trying to figure out what their purpose is, is it to try and keep kangaroos from crossing the road and getting hit and calling accidents?
