What's East Anglia like?
I'm from the region known as New England in the US (made up of the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut).
The original settlers of our region in colonial times were Puritans, primarily from East Anglia. Despite technically being religious zealots (what with the witch burning and all), their culture emphasized higher education and direct democracy (via town hall meetings), and today New England has some the best quality of life in the US, as well as some of the best universities in the world.
When they left in the 17th century, as I understand it, East Anglia was one of the most developed parts of England, due to the extensive trade with the Netherlands, and the Puritans brought their middle class lifestyle and skill set (as well as their relatively plain cuisine) with them to America. Their descendants, many of which still live in New England, became known as the original 'Yankees', and were noted merchants and sailors in US history.
So, I've always been curious what modern East Anglia is like (beyond what one can learn from a Wikipedia article)? Is it known for anything in particular, any particular kind of industry, subject to certain stereotypes, etc?
