Homeless in Greenbelt
I used to do security at Brodie Oaks. Lots of fond memories. Years later I would religiously visit the hill by Pok E Joe's to watch the sunset.
Now I live in the apts next door. What a shock when I went into the greenbelt and was asked by it's dwellers to not come back. I met one guy who had a battery with electricity for his shack, and said he supplied its inhabitants with meth.
He said they had an agreement with the city or some organization, to leave their garbage behind what used to be the indoor inflatable castle place to be picked up. Because of the rocky terrain and shaky trails, however, it was easier just to burn everything.
I stayed out for a year, then they cleared everyone out and cleaned up the mountains of garbage.
I guess they're moving back in. Hiking the mountain bike trail next to the hill behind the Toys R Us RIP it was like a construction zone, hammering, sawing, clearing space, various fires, piles of scrapwood and trash. Actually not sure if they were ever completely cleared out the parts behind Toys R Us.
I'm totally for helping people folks get off the streets, I've volunteered to help them, and I think it's shameful that the richest country in the world can't take care of its own.
However, not feeling safe in public lands right behind my house, and worried they will set the woods on fire, that are basically covered in kindling and dead trees anyway, not to mention breathing in the toxic smoke from burning all their garbage is unacceptable.
Thoughts? News? Who would I talk to? Freeze is coming, should I just accept it and wait until spring to take action? Am I being selfish?
