Regurgitator created some of Australia's most unintentional Autistic Anthems
So I was creating a playlist of Australian music throughout the decades for a friend in another country, and as I listened to the lyrics of Regurgitator's songs I recognised so much of myself and general Autism in them. It could just be some crazy 3am thinking, or maybe there is something to it. Some of the big notable ones are:
'My Robot Friend' is basically about rejecting normal human conventions and settling for a robot that is predictable and will do most of the things we need to:
"He is zero's and one's and I know this
He is not flesh and he can't kiss
But who needs humans when humans get angry and humans get ugly and
I got a friend and he's a robot man
You know I got a friend he's a computer man"
'Black Bugs' talks about fixation on a video game and not being able to sleep until you reach the end. It also uses a lot of repetition in the song.
"Stared at the tv too long now and I'm not the same
I've got to remind myself that it's just a game
It's getting harder and harder to get to sleep at night
I think i'll let them shoot me so that I can die
What's at the end?
What's at the end?
What's at the end of Satan's rainbow?"
'I Piss Alone', being the fear of going to the public toilet when other people are around and hearing the noises they make.
"I want a world where pissing troughs are obselete
there's only rows and rows of cubicles
I'm so afraid
When I try it is often delayed
I stand and stare into the air
And then I might just put it away"
And then '! (The Song Formerly Known As)' which basically encapsulates the feeling of being sensory overloaded and even mentions a lack of understanding what other people are talking about. And talks about a desire to just be alone with the person you love.
I don't go to parties, baby
'Cause people tend to freak me out
Watch their lips, you can work it out
I can hear the words, but I still don't know what it's all about
You won't see me down the disco mama
Bright lights really hurt my eyes
I'd rather stay and dance with you
To the funky music playing on your stereo, oh
Well, things don't get no better
Better than you and me
(Ooh-ooh) well, things don't get no better
Better than you and me
I don't go to concerts baby
Music's always up too loud
Cigarettes and alcohol get up my a**e
I always lose you in the crowd, yeah
You won't see me tribal raving baby
'Cause I won't ever look that good
I'd rather dance in ugly pants
In the comfort of a lounge room in Suburbia, oh
Well, things don't get no better
Better than you and me
(Ooh-ooh) well, things don't get no better
Better than you and me
