How did guts sword not cut Griffith??

In the latest chapters when it’s revealed that the moon boy is Griffith aka guts son and guts failed to cut Griffith that genuinely got me depressed following this manga for years and I resonated with the fact he was shocked the only thing he could depend on (his sword) failed him.

Does anyone have any idea where the story is headed
