Please help a New Yorker make hard rolls!

Hi all, first time post here

I am a native New Yorker who has lived in various places around the US, and have always been amazed at the lack of availability of the humble but delicious hard roll.

For those who don't know, a hard roll is kinda like a kaiser roll but with a a crisper, flakier crust and a denser inside.

I have since landed in eastern Massachusetts, hopefully permanently, but hard rolls are unavailable here as well.

Through the years I have tried to find recipes for hard rolls but they always come out more like kaiser rolls, onion rolls, or like what New Englanders call bulkie rolls, never what I am actually looking for

Can anyone out there provide me with a real, new York hard roll recipe so I am not limited to enjoying them only when making trips back to visit family in NY?
