Prioritising British English & the UK Flag for English Versions of Websites
For those of you who own or are involved in managing websites, I’d like to suggest prioritising British English and the UK flag for the English version of your site.
English originates from the United Kingdom, and for European-focused platforms, it seems only natural to use British English rather than defaulting to the American variant. While both are widely understood, using British English helps reinforce a European identity and reduces the dominance of American soft power in language.
This also applies to English teachers, whether in schools, online courses, or private lessons. Promoting British English over American English ensures that learners adopt the European standard of the language rather than an external version.
If you use generative model (eg. mistral) to refine your texts, you can also configure them to use British English. As a non-native English speaker, I don’t always notice the differences, but setting British English as the default helps maintain consistency.
It’s a small but meaningful change that aligns with the goal of supporting European culture and identity. What are your thoughts?
