Camera rec to leave my phone behind

Hope I do this right and don't annoy everyone here. I found that I have to include a questionnaire, so that is below.

Short version: I want to stop taking my phone as many places. Especially when I'm with my kids. I just want to be on it less. So I got an apple watch with cellular so I can still be reached or make calls in an emergency (but talking and texting on the apple watch sucks, so I just don't do it). But the problem is that I want/need to be able to take pictures. So I want to get a digital camera that is as small/inexpensive as possible while still taking photos at least as good as the iPhone 15 pro max.

  • Budget: Very flexible. As inexpensive as possible. Under $1000 would be amazing. Under $500 would be even more amazing. But I would go over that if I have to, would just have to save up a bit
  • Country: USA
  • Condition: Prefer new, but open to used if there is a way
  • Type of Camera: Unsure. Digital, not film. At least as much zoom (5x I think?) as the iPhone 15 pro max. Randomly, I do have the lens (lens only) from the Sony ZVe10. But I do not need to use that lens.
  • Intended use: Photography only
  • If photography; what style: Mostly youth sports (soccer) and stage performance for my kids. But also random family shots at events and stuff and just beautiful shots/etc.
  • If video what style: N/A
  • What features do you absolutely need: (e.g. weather sealing, articulating screen, dual card slots, viewfinder, hot-shoe for mounting accessories like a flash, etc.)
  • What features would be nice to have:  Not critical, but huge bonus points (and would pay a bit extra) for beautiful design. I like (but prob can't afford) the Leicas in this sense. Retro-modern/etc.
  • Portability: Very. Would be amazing if it could fit in a hoodie pocket or jacket pocket for ease
  • Cameras you're considering: N/A
  • Cameras you already have: Just my iPhone
  • Notes: As good or better (including zoom) as an iPhone. Thats most important. I do care about style, particularly that vintage look. Not looking to spend extra for no reason, but am also willing to spend a bit more for a legacy brand that is likely to last
