Weekly Recommendation: Otogi: Myth of Demons (2002)

Developed by: From Software

Published by: SEGA

Available on: Xbox, Xbox Store

Otogi is a early 6th generation hack and slash game developed by From Software, that would get a sequel the following year but would unfortunately remain dormant ever since. The first game follows Raikoh Minamoto who was born into the emperor’s executioners clan, but after being ordered to kill his own father he instead decides to his clan’s ancestral sword and leave the city, however as he leaves the seal between the human and demon world is broken and Raikoh is killed in the process, but a princess gives him a new body where he now resides between life-death in exchange for his services in saving the human world from demons.

The game follows traditional hack and slash gameplay from a 3rd person perspective. As Raikoh is now between life & death he is constant need of magic to keep him alive, the games magic gauge is constantly draining and once it had fully drained, Raikoh will become slower and his health will begin to deplete overtime. However Magic can be restored through killing enemies forcing you into a more aggressive playstyle throughout the game. The game also features an assortment of different weapons based on the elements Wind, Fire, Water and Lightning. And the environment is highly destructible and you are even able to make creaters in the floor that will stay there for the duration of the mission.

Fun Fact: Raikho is loosely based on historical figure, Minamoto no Yorimitsu, who was a Japanese samurai during the heian period.
