Writing a novella with ChatGPT

I’m seeing a lot of backlash currently, especially amongst educational quarters, regarding using ChatGPT as a writing tool. ‘GenAI refusal’ is the catch cry, particularly amid the tundra of LinkedIn.

For my part, I’ve benefited greatly from using ChatGPT as a writing tool across the year - for ideation (talking with Voice Chat), planning and note taking, structuring and proof reading, etc. I use it in conjunction with Obsidian, I build CustomGPTs full of notes, and have successfully written a number of works that I’ve been very happy with using this process. It works for me.

I penned a LinkedIn article (just typing that sentence makes me feel unclean) this morning, that goes into some of the possible politics at play in rejecting AI as a writing tool, but more proactively I share my ChatGPT ‘executive functioning’ strategies that I used during the writing of a novella earlier this year.

It’s idiosyncratic and offbeat, but for some it might resonate: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/craig-warren-smith_artificialintelligence-writing-futurism-activity-7266525165662953472-Hccq

What are your thoughts, do you benefit from using ChatGPT as part of your writing toolbox? We’re not talking about asking ChatGPT to write a story / essay for you, it’s about the strategic way it can support cognitive load. I’m interested in other experiences here.

If anybody would like me to go into further detail about any of my ChatGPT writing strategies, let me know :)
