Supporting daughter with comp team
My daughter is 8 years old, and this is her first year on the competition team. Last year, she did a performance prep team. She did well on it (though she's not as flexible as the other girls). We were really pleased to hear she'd made the team after auditions in May.
The studio also has you fill out an interest survey where you say how many routines you'd be willing to dance in and whether you'd like to be considered for any trios/duos/solos. We put 3 routines (2-3 seemed typical for first timers in prior years) and yes on trios/duos/solos (though I knew this was unlikely).
Our studio has the kids audition separately for different styles: Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, and then one combined audition for Jazz/Contemporary/Lyrical/Musical Theatre/Open all together. We had a scheduling conflict with ballet, and she hadn't done much tap, so we only opted for two auditions: Hip Hop and Jazz/Contemporary/Lyrical/Musical Theatre/Open. Of the other girls on her performance prep team who auditioned, only one auditioned for Hip Hop as well.
A few weeks after the general email that she'd made the comp team, we got routine casting back. She was only cast in one routine (a large hip hop group). Some of the other girls from the performance prep team also got cast in one routine, but it was for lyrical. I'm not sure if this was because they didn't try out for hip hop and she did, so those eligible for lyrical only "filled up" all the slots. It's honestly hard to know.
My daughter has felt a bit left out because she's in the technique class with everyone, but she leaves once they begin practice. Additionally, the hip hop choreography is more complicated than the lyrical choreography (their performance prep team did a lyrical dance, and the hip hop choreo has changed a lot since they learned it). I'd say maybe her flexibility kept her back, but there are multiple girls in lyrical who are the same.
Has anyone had an experience like this? I'm almost worried that I need to be more strategic with what she auditions for.
