How to handle widely different styles at various DJ gigs?
Happy new year DJ's.
This is just a curiosity question.
I'm a full time DJ. My residencies require me to play very different music styles. So one gig is very much Afro, Hip Hop, Shatta and Reggaeton because that is what that club is all about. But another club is purely pop, rock and disco classics. There is hardly any overlap in songs between the different clubs.
I like this because it never gets boring to me and I can find my way in many different styles. So right now this is very much working for me.
But there is a downside. I may not know as much about Afro than Afro specialist. Also I never get into a certain flow and mindset because the next day I need a completely mindset. If I don't get in the proper mindset I don't come up with the correct songs to play.
Food for thought, maybe if I had to focus on one thing i would be better at that one thing than i am now.
I wonder if any of you experience the same and how you handle it. How get you today in that hip hop mindset but tomorrow in that disco classics mindset.
Thank you.
