GP thinking about applying to Ortho residency
Hello Reddit community!
I really need some advice on what I should do with my career. Here’s my situation:
Finished AEGD in 2020 and realized I don’t like doing surgeries, like Perio. Then I worked at a community clinic for a little over 2 years and tried to do molar RCT and surgical EXT and realized I don’t like either. A lot of the patients I worked on were angry or rude. I didn’t have a good experience for the most part. I’m fed up with general dentistry to the point that I don’t want to continue investing in myself to improve my clinical skills. I thought about just getting the fuck out of dentistry for good. But I don’t know what else I can do as an alternative. Also, I’m in my mid thirties and I’m becoming more and more risk averse… I’m worried that if I embark on something new, what if I don’t make it and regret my decision again? I’ve been thinking so much about what to do and it’s becoming clear to me that if I continue dentistry, I need to specialize. I’m leaning toward Ortho but I know it’s very competitive to get into. I did no research or anything ortho related in dental school. No shadowing or other ortho experience post dental school. What are my chances of getting accepted? Should I even try? I’d appreciate your advice! Thank you!!!
