For the dental students/residents wondering about associate pay, here’s my most recent paystub as a pediatric dentist

I’ve always been a huge proponent of pay transparency and feel like I never got a good idea of what a realistic associate dentist salary was. I’m a pediatric dentist in a major metropolitan area in the Northeast and just started my job at the end of July.

For some context, the office is about 70% Medicaid/30% PPO. I plan to start OR cases in the next month or so, I’ve just been seeing patients in-office the past month. I see anywhere from 25-40 patients per day depending on how many hygiene checks I do. I’m paid either $1,000 daily or 40% of collections, whichever is higher. I get paid for exams, fluoride, and operative (including nitrous). I don’t get paid for X-rays or any prophies that the hygienists complete (I do prophies on younger kids below 7 and get paid for the prophies I complete). I get paid biweekly, so every two weeks, the office looks at how many days I worked and compares that to the amount of collections attributed to work that I did. The office collection close to 99% when looking at adjusted production. I’ve been producing on average $4,000-4,500 and have hit $5,000 a few times.

In this 2-week period shown in the screenshot, I worked 8 days, which would equate to a guarantee of $8,000. My collections throughout that 2-week period were $24,153.78. Since 40% of my collections equals $9,661.51 (higher than my guarantee), my gross pay for that period was $9,661.51. I don’t yet qualify for the office’s health insurance or retirement benefits so I didn’t have any additional deductions. Happy to answer any questions anyone has regarding associate pay or to clarify anything!
