How to build connections?

Since i am the first person who joined a feild of design in my family, i have no idea how things works Decision of even joining this field was a sudden one but i am loving it

I heard how networking and building connections are great thing to do, and i have seen magics of having good connections, but how, how to make those connections?

I am clueless how am i gonna build my career, i am clueless on which feild to choose, what to do, how to do, how to build portfolio etc
