21 miles on the VMAX VX4
Just a quick purchase report from a new owner.
I bought the VX4 GT for $1084, all in, on the Black Friday sale and didn't have a lot to go on here. So a quick rundown of my experience so far.
There are rides that obviously get a lot more love on here then the VMAX. But for some reason my mind just kept coming back to this one. I had previously bought, and returned, a KQI 3 pro several months ago, and a KQI 300x several days ago, before pulling the trigger on the VX4.
I love it so far! And am so grateful I listened to my gut and returned the 300x.
Purchase & Shipping: purchase was easy enough. I added a -$15 code from one of the paid reviewers to the lowest price. VMAX was quick to make the shipping label. But then they drop it at a UPS Access Point. The box then appeared to sit there for 3 days. Because UPS doesn't scan boxes when they leave an access point. So - while it appeared nothing was happening and the box was stuck, 3 days later it was suddenly scanned at a depot an hour away from my house. So, don't fret, it's probably moving already.
Support & Sales: putting a scooter in my cart and leaving it there resulted in some texts the following day. They were nice and not pushy. Asking if I had questions. Pitching some of the marketing lines. One disappointment is that prior to actually purchasing the scooter they would answer any text from me within minutes. I have literally sent them 9 messages since I made the purchase and they have totally ghosted me. And while it ultimately doesn't matter, it's annoying. I would suggest to VMAX that if your plan is to position yourself as the "luxury" brand you would do well to be prepared for a bit of hand holding. And hand holding is cheap, so why not do it?
Packaging: no complaints. An easy unbox and it's almost entirely cardboard which I appreciate much more then Styrofoam!! Eco friendly packing for the most part.
Assembly: Easy. I was very careful not to strip any screws and was prepared for needing a minute to feed the thicker wires down the neck. Both tips I received here from the previous un-paid review. Thank you!
Ride quality is spectacular! I've ridden good street, rough street, parking lots, paved bike paths, dirt bike paths, and even blown through a bit of soft grass & slight mud. The hybrid tires are awesome. The suspension comfortable. The deck is spacious and allows me to experiment with different foot positions, which is good as I am a new rider. The cruise control sets and disengages easily. I am not having any problems with locking the breaks, which is something I was worried about. Acceleration is smooth, yet also fun in sport mode. And I have absolutely no business going over 25mph so I am glad that I can't. Ground clearance is fun and it feels good being a little higher up when going up and down curbs and speed bumps.
I've got a bottle of Armor Dilloz Red on the way. I needed to align the handlebars a bit but the method was simple and easy to find on the VMAX website. Fit and Finish across the board is really really clean. And yes, the latch for when the unit is folded is annoyingly easy to disengage. I'm putting an air gauge through it for now and it's fine to move into & out of the car etc. I might feel different if I had to do more carrying.
There are obviously a lot of scooters out there with more specs and less cost. But for me, at this price, the VX4 reached a value proposition that worked for me. I rode 21 miles the last two days in 50F degree weather and literally haven't bothered to look down at the battery display once. When I got home today it was at 51% and I simply thought "sweet". That was a big part of what I wanted. Charge anxiety is a real thing for me. And riding without it is awesome!
For this 53 yr old, 5'-9", 185lb, new scooter rider / long time motorcycle and dirt bike rider - the VX4 is hitting a lot of things just right. Long range, comfortable ride, reliable cruise control, very usable speed range that's loads of fun, top of what I'd want for weight, ready for varied terrain, and a scooter that was built to go right out of the box. I don't need to tighten, modify, and fix 6 different things before I even ride it. And as I get older my friends, I'd much rather be riding then wrenching, whenever possible.
Obviously I have no idea how these units will do in the longevity category. But at first blush? It looks promising to me. Hopefully that turns out to be the case. And if it does, then I suspect I will be super happy with my choice in the long run just as I am so far. It's frickin awesome! 😎
Also thank you to everyone here who replied and chatted with me while I was shopping! It's such a great help and so appreciated!
