Why are math rock bands like American Football considered emo? At what point did they start to be considered emo?

I'm new to this whole emo lore thing and it confuses me greatly. If emo emerges as a more introspective and sentimental current of hardcore punk... why are these kinds of bands unanimously considered emo if they make a style that has nothing to do with it?
