Movies with a strong ERD vibe: Mike Leigh's "Naked" (1993)
I might make a post every week or so on this subreddit about a movie that I think strongly encapsulates the ERD spirit. I'm after films that are weird and dark. If people have seen it, feel free to share your thoughts. And if you haven't, and are looking for something good to watch, check it out and get back to us. I'll only post movies that aren't already referenced directly by the brand (e.g. Mulholland drive, which is a must see). Other people should do this too, maybe for books as well as movies.
Along with David Cronenberg's "Crash" (1996), "Naked" probably best exemplifies nineties nihilism. It's a bleak film, with a protagonist who is hard to sympathize with. If you're not from Britain, it may be advisable to watch it with English subtitles, since the northern accents are a bit difficult to decipher at times. Also note that the film does feature a few scenes of sexual violence, which may be difficult for some to watch.
If you're unfamiliar with Mike Leigh's style of improvisation technique, note that the dialogue for his films is typically developed by the individual actors working together in the part of their characters prior to filming. This results in a naturalism that is incredibly plausible, which makes the film all the more moving. "Secrets and Lies" (1996) is also quite good, but not edgy and dark the way that "Naked" is.
