If you speak a non-English language that a character speaks, how do you feel about people using the language in their fics?
Recently, I've started thinking about something—how do people feel when writers use different languages for petnames and such in their fics?
For example, I am in a fandom where one of the main characters is American-Lithuanian, and in many ship fics, he is written to use Lithuanian petnames for his partner.
I never thought about this before, mind you. I would read a fic, see a Spanish-speaking character call their partner something lovey-dovey in Spanish, and thing "aw, cute" and continue reading.
The first time I read a fic from the fandom that did it with MY native language? I cringed. I don't know, it makes me feel so odd. I do still read the fic, and over time I've gotten used to it and started to even enjoy it somewhat, but it still makes me feel a bit weird.
People who speak languages other than English, how do you feel about this kind of thing?
Edit: I wanted to add that I'm not discouraging people to use different languages, I like it! It just catched me off guard. Also, my fandom especially likes to use "Mylimasis", AKA "My love", and it's just something I don't hear Lithuanian couples using? Maybe it's because I've lived in England for 8 years and haven't been around many, and because my dad uses 'petnames' and literally the most common one is "Pupa", which means BEAN. It's jusf funny to see
