Suggestions for Autocross?
I’m going to my first autocross event next weekend. It’s not a serious event, but to help everyone become better drivers.
I’m planning to do an oil change beforehand with 0w-20. This will be in a cooler climate going into a cold winter. Though checking the weather a week out, it is saying partly cloudy at 80 degrees F. I’ve seen folks recommend a heavier weight, but we’ll have cool down periods after short runs, and I’ll monitor oil temps.
I’ve also seen people recommend track pads and changing out other fluids. My GR86 was fully serviced before purchase with 6500 miles. It’s at 9300 now, so I’d expect everything to be fine if I’m not pushing it really hard? Everything will be checked by my mechanic beforehand.
What would be the max RPMs I should hold? To find a nice balance between pushing the limits but not doing any damage. I imagine I’ll mainly be in 2nd gear with the setup they’re doing. And I’ll be surrounded by seasoned guys who are gonna help me and probably ride along on at least one or two.
In terms of safety features, what should I expect to be turning off? I’ve not turned any off at this point while driving. Is just enabling the track mode my best bet?
A lot of questions, but answering any one of them would be greatly appreciated. If you have a suggestion I didn’t cover, let me know! Not a gear head quite yet, but owning this car is forcing me to learn a lot, in a good way.
I took it out to a “mountain climb” (very small mountain) with a number of tight corners and switchbacks today. It handled beautifully in 3rd gear at 4500-5000 rpms. All safety features were left on seeing it was a public road.
