Gon's complexity as a character
No matter how many analysis videos or analysis posts I watch and read of gon's character I just feel like I don't understand everything. The more I know about him the more complex he seems. I just can't seem to get a full picture on why he acts the way he does. His inconsistent morality, constant thirst for progress and proving himself, barely any sense of self-preservation, and etc. I just find it so hard to fit it all together. So I tried to summarize some popular views on gons character.
From my experience, these are the most popular(doesn't mean right or good) interpretations of gons character, also note that these interpretations are not necessarily mutually exclusive:
1.)Gon constantly is suffering from abandonment and self-esteem issues:
This one might be sort of obvious as there are many hints to the story itself. Ging abandons gon at a young age so he has a low sense of self. I guess he tries to rationalize this behaviour because he kinda treats his abandonement as normal? I mean a child thinking that there exists some very admirable and great reason that his dad left him is very weird and odd. So this may be him just coping with the situation. Notice how gon never actually resents ging or anything. In fact, he always resents himself. Like during the hunter exam, he had a talk on how he felt really useless and unhelpful. He also has a super consistent pattern of behaviour of always trying to prove himself, even to the point of risking his life several times. Examples: Gon's hands exploded against genthru, fight against hanzo, dodgeball game with razour, and etc. But its really not 100% clear if this is a result of him trying to prove himself worthy of ging or just his selfish pride or something? Because we never get to hear his inner thoughts...
2.)Gon is just a stereotypical shonen character:
So this view mainly comes from people who think gon is just a flat 1 dimensional character which I personally really disagree with but it is a real view people have. Some people think that gon's recklessness, morals, and motivations are just that of a normal shonen mc. Not gonna go too much into depth here since this view just sees gon as a boring character.
3.)Gon is a psychopath/amoral character:
This view holds that gon is inherently very selfish, stemming mainly from the fact that he grew up in the wilderness alongside wild animals. This probably affected his black and white mentally he holds in the series. Like Zepphile said he doesn't care about right and wrong but instead only cares about what interests or benefits him, just like a wild animal. Gon's actions such as befriending killua(A serial killer assasin), thanking binolt, and etc are mainyl used as support of this argument. Theres also the fact that gon is the son of ging, who is very selfish. Maybe ging dna just influenced gon somehow to also act selfishly. Afterall, you got to keep in mind that gon also lives in a completely different culture and world, where death is usually glossed over and selfishness(hunters basically) are kind of glorified. Now obviously this might be a severe oversimplification and gon's actions may just be a result of his simple mindedness. Remember that gon is still a kid so it may just be entirely possible that he doesn't have the cognitive capabilities to understand morally gray situations so he just goes with whatever he thinks is good at the moment. So he might've ,for example, thanked binolt because in that moment he just geniunely appreciated binolt for helping him grow stronger, not really thinking about the fact hes a serial killer. Anyways, enough for this view...
4.)Gon is deconstruction of shonen:
Personally, I view this argument as Togashi kind of experimenting with a new shonen mc. I forgot which interview it was but I remember Togashi saying that he wanted to create an 'edgy' or 'bad boy' mc for hxh and let viewers know that gon wasnt such a all good kid when he just easily left aunt mito to go for the hunter exam. So maybe togashi put the typical qualities of a shonen mc like endless optimism, recklessness at the cost of self preservation, determinism, insane will power, and also the fact that he's a child. Then he places gon through the cruel world of hunters. So as the show progresses we start to see more and more the consequences of his actions gets worse and worse until gon reaches his breaking point during the chimera ant arc. I kinda like this view because it shows what would realistically happened if the typical child shonen protagonist in anime would go through in a more realistic and cruel setting.
There are more views and arguments I wanna discuss but I'm tired of writing so I'll stop here. Please let me know your views and thoughts on gon as a character. I really don't care if you even think hes badly written just please at least explain your point(with some examples). Just wanna further my understanding of the character
