Should I just give up and get into sales?
Long story short, about 2 years ago I graduated with a Bachelor’s of science degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) with an emphasis on Information Security.
Only worked one pretty lame internship in web development over covid that never lead to anything and since graduation only could get work as a bank teller and a technical support representative (not help desk).
I have 0 certifications at the moment, but I have my CompTIA A+ exams pre-paid for and taking that in January 2025, hoping to leverage that with my degree to find something entry level - on top of running home labs. Yet this certification is still bare bones basic and nothing compared to the CCNA, CISSP or even the Security+/Network+ certification.
Main reason I’m asking if I should just try getting into tech sales is because when I look at the market, all these “”entry level”” positions require 3+ years experience, bachelors degree or above, multiple certifications & security clearance (mainly due to the area I live) - and even with all this, the starting wage is like $21/hr. Meanwhile I see multiple entry level tech sales jobs paying $55,000+/yr starting WITH job training.
I feel like me choosing this degree was career suicide for my dreams because the entire tech market is so screwed up now that even entry level help desk jobs are being gobbled up by software engineers and computer scientists.
Main reason I ask is I’m not getting any younger, and I feel like I’m just wasting my time sitting here using all my free time building pretend shit in my house, learning endless amounts of meaningless acronyms, and attending in-person networking events only to have people ask me, “do you have security clearance” only for them to seem disappointed when I say no. I could join the military, but I feel like that defeated the whole reason I went to college in the first place instead of just enlisting at 18 and getting it paid for.
End of rant I just needed to vent thank you :)
