Overbooking/ rescheduled flight

While I was about to board my first flight yesterday (not KLM) I got a message from KLM saying my flight with them was rescheduled for today the 6th because of a change of aircraft. I’m not sure if then it’s a smaller plane or maybe they just got overbooked and directly sent me that new schedule.

The thing is I had to spend the night in Barcelona where I didn’t have a place to stay. I tried to contact them but it was impossible. At the end I got a reply on their WhatsApp service. I asked if they could find me an accommodation and the answer was no. Not even an arranged transport. My only answer was pay for everything, save the tickets and then send it to costumer service.

I know that I will get a refund for this, but I find it unbelievable the lack of help. I work in the hospitality industry and, when this happens, I see that the airlines are the ones booking the overnight with us and also provide the transfer service.

I am not really keen on having to pay a part of the costs that I am having considering that this is not my choice and they were the ones who didn’t reschedule me to a later flight that I saw they had.

Also, does somebody know if I can get any extra compensation for a work day lost because of this? It has caused me extra problems.
