Alcoholics who overcame there addiction.. how did you do it??

Husband of someone close to me is an alcoholic. He is a good guy when sober.. but when he is drunk he is just like a kallukudiyan on the road. Verbally abuses her on the phone. Wondering if there is someone who actually overcome this?
