The life of Devayani- Part 1
Now, we all have seen Devayani as a bubbly actress who was mostly adept with traditional roles and had seldom indulged in skin show. Beyond that, we have also seen Devayani acting in the acclaimed serial, Kolangal which at that time had generated a huge TRP among the viewers.
If I remember clearly, the 90s saw an influx of North Indian heroines into Tamil Cinema. From Devayani to Simran, we had seen many actress debuting into Tamil Cinema during this period. While they were primarily brought in to be an eye-candy for viewers, people like Devayani did manage to prove their acting chops after initially appearing in glamorous roles too.
Devayani was born as Sushma Jayadev and she has constantly faced harassment from cinema personnel right from a successful hero (which we would discuss in the later paragraphs) to even some ordinary technician. For instance, there was once a casting director had peeped on her hungrily in the pretext of explaining a scene to her. And all these occurred to her when she is was still in her teens, when she was not even 20 years of age. Almost all of the cinema persons that she met were hungry wolves who were hungry sex wolves that would attempt to do disgusting things to her or were making explicit gestures to her.
Like how was Sridevi or Meena were controlled by their mothers, Devayani too was controlled by her mom and all financial matters were decided by Devayani’s mom. In other words, Devayani’s mother determined the salary that was to be paid to her and she had also managed the dates of Devayani.
As we have discussed in the previous paragraph, Devayani saw many predators in filming except for few people who treated her well like Vijay, Ajith, or Raghuvaran. Now, the successful hero who gave her the bigggest torture was none other than our Supreme Star Sarath Kumar. A simple research on his personal life would tell you that he had fought with Ajith for Heera and had even almost all of his savings to produce a film for Nagma although that movie ended up becoming a box office dud. Similarly, our Supreme Star ended up falling head over heels in love with Devayani and had made various attempts to get closer to her. One of the ways were to sign Devayani up for as many as films possible to ensure that he could regularly meet and court her. So this would now explain why we saw the both of them regularly pairing up. The best part is Supreme Star did all this while he was still married to Chaya, Varalakshmi’s mother. Now, Devayani’s mother being a money minder personality never cared much about this harassment from Supreme Star and kept giving call sheets to him as she loved the high fees that was being paid.
Devayani was fed up of all this and felt sad that there was not a peaceful atmosphere in her life. It was around this period, that she had met a very simple looking assistant director in the name of Rajakumaran. This man was quite different from the other men she met in cinema. First, he was very respectful and would always politely ask her to move so that he doesn’t end up touching her inappropriately. He had always attended to her needs and always made sure that she got served the best food, to the extent that he would go on to travel as far as 30km to ensure that she got her favourite North Indian food.
So, one day she had randomly asked him if he ever liked her. And, as you would correctly guess, he said yes but promised her that it would be an innocent one-sided love and that he would not in any way disturb or harass her to accept his love. And again as you would expect, she too confessed that she liked him. She was impressed by the fact that for the first time a men respected her for the person she was. She felt that he would be able to provide a peaceful live for her.
Now, they were in love and were going steady together. Of course, they had hid the relationship from media and also from Devayani’s family. However, the media managed to sense something and started writing up stories about how the two were in love. These stories gained steam as it was around this time another North Indian actress, Kushboo married another Tamil director Sundar C.
The best part or perhaps the climax of this part 1, is that these rumours blew up at the time when was Rajakumaran was directing Vinukkum Manukkum starring SARATH KUMAR and Devayani,
How does Sarath Kumar react? Is it true that he beats up Rajakumaran? How does Devayani’s parents react to this? And who saved the both of them? We would see it all in Part 2
