How do you feel about the term ‘lesbian’

I identify as bisexual but my girlfriend is a lesbian - but only refers to herself as ‘gay’. It’s never really crossed my mind that this might have a deeper reason.. but recently I’ve become aware of the historic importance of the term ‘lesbian’ and the negative connotations that some people have with it. How do you feel?
