Thoughts on Selena Gomez in the Emilia Perez movie?
Disclaimer: I have NOT seen the Emilia Perez movie, I've only seen the discourse about it online. If I'm not mistaken, Selena Gomez's character is an American and a non-native Spanish speaker, hence why she's not fluent.
Many native Spanish speakers say they can barely understand what she was saying. In an interview, Eugenio Derbez criticized Selena's Spanish to which she wrote that comment in response. The common point is that Selena's Spanish sounds unnatural, like she doesn't understand what she's saying.
I personally don't speak Spanish, I'm not Latina, but I'm a third Gen West African, so I grew up in the diaspora not back home. I don't speak my native language and anytime I try it's with a really poor English accent. I understand my language perfectly but it's hard to speak because it doesn't come naturally. Anytime I go home I'm heavily criticized by my relatives and even strangers for not speaking my language, deeming me a "foreigner". But I still feel out of place in the US, everywhere 😭 so as much as I can respect that the Latino community feels strongly about Selena's performance, part of me relates to her a lot.
It's super cool hearing the boys talk about how they feel in identifying as Latino being mixed or non-native Spanish speakers, I feel like it's an experience a lot of people relate to.
What do you guys think about the movie and Selena's performance?
