Santa Ana Winds Update
Hi r/LosAngeles!
Here's an update on the wind & fire danger situation. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions. If you don’t feel comfortable posting a question: send me a chat message, and I’ll try to reply as soon as I can.
Please stay safe, and take care of each other.
TLDR Version
Santa Ana winds are weakening, and Red Flag Warnings for most areas (not all, see Thursday section) end at 6PM tonight. Winds will get lighter for most of the region tonight into tomorrow. An onshore breeze (wind blowing in from the ocean) will return for the next few days. Humidity will increase, and we may even get some low clouds. Overnight temps will remain chilly.
Thursday
We will start the day with weaker Santa Ana Winds, but only for parts of the area (Santa Susana Mountains, Ventura County, Porter Ranch). This will keep the fire danger elevated for those areas, so the Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 3PM on Thursday for a few areas.
Lingering Red Flag Warnings for Thursday (as of 1/15)
The winds switch direction and start blowing in from the ocean (onshore breeze) during the afternoon for most of us. Humidity will quickly increase across the region, and fire danger decreases.
Friday - Weekend
Onshore flow continues for the weekend, and the marine layer may bring some low clouds back to the area. These generally should clear by late morning, but some clouds may linger into the early afternoon. Temperatures will be much cooler: upper 50s to low 60s.
Next Week
The long range forecast suggests that the Santa Ana Winds and fire danger will make a return for at least Monday into Tuesday...but there is some uncertainty about how strong the winds could be. I'll try to post again when we know more.
One More Thought
As I mentioned before, the outpouring of support that I’ve seen for those affected by the fires has been beautiful. It shows how amazing the people of this city and region are. Remember that the impacts from the fires will continue to be felt for months and years to come. Be kind to one another and get to know your neighbors.
Again, please stay safe, and take care of each other.
