Marine medals on navy uniform?

Sorry for my ignorance but I inherited a uniform from my great grandfather that was in ww2. He has this marine corp medal on his uniform and I'm really confused on why it's on the uniform or if he was awarded it. Is it possible that seaman trained with the marines and were awarded these? He was on a transporter ship in the pacific.
