When does a lender actually provide closing funds?

I'm closing next Wednesday but we're still trying to figure out which lender to finalize things with.

I've seen posts on here about people only sometimes finalizing the day of closing. How does the funding happen if that's the case, can the lender actually get the funds out to the lawyer on the same day? Does it not take a couple days beforehand or something?
