85mm with Character for Z

I used to own the 85 1.4 AF-D and it got me into pro photography, but ever since switching to the 85 1.8S, it feels like my Portraits have lost some Character. Why on earth is there no replacement for Z? Does anybody have any recommendations? I have thought about a used AF-S 85 or 105 AF-S, but still hate adapting them. The 85 1.2 is just way too big and heavy.
