How do you merge changes into a template you've already started using and modifying, if the template creator releases updates?
Hey r/Notion,
Have you ever come across a scenario where:
- You get a template
- You start making entries into the databases, even customise it a little by adding a database property here and there
- The template creator releases an update to their template, adding new features which involve some structural or database changes
Now, the template has some cool new tricks (which you want) but the problem is, by using and modifying the template, you've already "forked" it and gone down a different path. How do you migrate to the new version while keeping your data and changes intact?
To draw a parallel with git/GitHub, is there an easy and automatic way in which Notion lets you compare two templates and merge the two "branches" so to speak, so that both my changes and the template creator's changes are combined?
I suppose I could ask the template creator to tell me how they made the changes and then re-create them step by step, but assuming they'll even entertain that, it defeats the purpose of using a template for casual users who don't understand or want to do all that legwork.
This raises a bigger question (though not the main point of my post) - how do businesses who use Notion for stuff like project management handle this? For example, if they start with a template that offers a certain set of features at the beginning, then realise "oh damn this new update would be great to have, but it changes the database design a little", how do they go about integrating the update if Notion is crucial for their everyday operations and is constantly getting new data put into it from several people?
I'd love to hear from especially those who have set up Notion professionally for companies.
