Why do I have a wall tree in my shower?

1906 house with original bathroom upstairs, but this shower is a converted utility closet adjacent to the bathroom. Not sure when it was done, but the tile looks mid-century.

Why does the shower have this wall tree? What did they hang in here? I can't imagine towels.
