“Think about the dogs”- Fireworks posts
Alright, so this a bit of a strange one.
Where I live you are allowed to buy and light up your own fireworks for New Year’s Eve. This is tradition and a very big percentage of people enjoy it and will set off loud fireworks into the air or on the ground the whole day on December 31st.
Around New Years I see a lot of posts on social media and on local bulletin boards of pet owners (Mostly dog owners). These posts are often sad looking dogs with captions like “Please think of us when you celebrate the new year. We will start it scared and quivering”, or other sad pictures requesting people to not use fireworks or stop setting it off during their “dog-walking-time”. It’s these kind of posts I find very annoying. Mostly because:
- I dislike people speaking (and pushing their opinions and beliefs )through animals.
- It’s asking people to stop doing something they like and have done traditionally for a very long time. Only because their pet is uncomfortable.
- It feels like they are pushing pet ownership responsibilities on me and others.
- it’s using language in a way that insinuates that if you don’t comply with their request, you are cruel to animals and therefore a piece of shit.
I get really annoyed when I see one. But the strange part is that I don’t like the Fireworks either. If it were up to me, I would ban the sale of fireworks to consumers. It’s dangerous, a hassle to clean of the streets and an overal nuisance.
Even though I agree with the desired outcome of the people who make these ridiculous and annoying posts, I cannot help but feel like setting of fireworks just to spite them. (I don’t, of course)
Anyone experienced something similar?
