Quit or else. What should I do next?

I am a first year PhD student in the English studies department. But since I accepted the offer, I realised that my research interests are more aligned with sociology than English. I asked the graduate director and they told me that I couldn’t transfer. So I’ve been avoiding thinking about it for a while. I have to reach out to my potential supervisor in the department according to the requirements. I did it today, and she asked me if I am interested in people or texts. I think I knew the answer, but I don’t know if I tell her that I am interested in people not text, then why I am still in the department.. I am so lost rn🥲
