Unpaid Leave Implications
I am tenured at a LAC. I'm pregnant and have a pregnancy related medical issue that has made this semester really difficult. Technically I have intermittent medical leave for half time each week through FMLA due to my diagnosis, but the way that is being accommodated does not involve any teaching coverage, so it ends up either not being enough leave for me or being really crappy for students.
One of the possibilities that has been floated is that I take unpaid leave for Spring term. I'm okay with that even though it doesn't feel fully "fair." Baby is due near the end of the term. I was also planning to request a semester of unpaid leave for Fall 25 to be home with baby (our parental leave policy is...inadequate).
What potential unintended consequences and repercussions of taking a full calendar year of leave am I not thinking about? I get my health insurance through my spouse. Financially losing a year of my income is okay for us. (And I know I'm very lucky that both of those things are true.)
