Puerto Ricans are Pushy
Here is what I mean. Many Puerto Ricans seem to not understand that one can enjoy solitude and not want to converse with others. I could be sitting somewhere in public just reading and I get random strangers on a fairly regular basis being pushy, wanting to converse with me, and ask an absurd amount questions about one's life. Like dude, I'm here minding my own business. I don't want to talk. I'm not showing any indication that I want to socialize. This occurs in the island and the mainland.
Even when I lived in the island I would get neighbors trying to look over my fence or through my gates to see what was going on in my property. Like WTF ? Mind you I don't play loud music, make a lot of noise, nor draw attention to myself. The only time I did not encounter this was in Viejo San Juan or Dorado; literally that's it. Anywhere else on the island it's the same issue.
There's also the pushy opportunistic attitude that people have. If let's say I am doing a project and using a tool or I have a nice piece of equipment one of the first things I hear is "Oye, préstame éso", "me lo puedes regalar", "déjame ver éso", "Que es éso ?". In the states I would have no issue letting a friend or a neighbor borrow something of mine. Why ? Because I got my stuff back within the hour or day.
In the island people really love to steal with no shame. I've seen way too many people get taken advantage of in PR to know not to ever let anyone borrow or even see my stuff. I have never felt the need to hide or be secretive until I lived on the island. Mind you I lived in what would be considered decent areas. I've seen how shit gets stolen here quickly. The only time it ever seems safe for my property is if I'm in Dorado.
There's also this weird thing with a lot of Puerto Ricans asking for money or wanting others to buy them things. An example would be let's say I buy a meal from a fast-food place. Every so often whether it's an acquaintance, neighbor, or stranger they come up ask me to buy them something as well. I never do and they start with the "Pero papi no sea así. No somos amistades ?" MF-er I don't know you. This has happened to so many people I knew as well. Even in states like NY Puerto Ricans do that quite a lot. I'm glad I left the island. It felt as if I were back in Venezuela.
