How to address persistent safety issue in building?
I live in a 12-unit building that has two double door entryways, and there have been persistent problems with these double doors (at least the set that I use). When I first moved in in 2021, there were two issues: 1) The locks were very fiddly so that you had to manipulate the key quite a bit until it turned. 2) I would often come home to find the doors ajar when normally they would click shut if you just let them go. Even the left door, which normally stays fixed to the door frame, would be open, as if someone had forced it.
After multiple communications to the leasing office, they replaced the locks and keys, however they did nothing to fix the second issue. All they did was post a notice like the one below alerting all the residents that someone was “tampering with the doors” and that this needed to stop.
Obviously if someone is in fact tampering with the doors, a flyer is not an effective way to stop them, so I kept insisting that the leasing office address this issue by replacing the doors. Eventually it was explained to me that this is not possible since the doors have to conform to a fire code. The leasing office explained that the doors have two sets of pins that normally remain in the “up” or secured position, but when moved to the “down” position they become unsecured and the doors can technically be pulled open without a key.
This is all very good to know, but again, it doesn’t do anything about the tampering problem! The leasing office itself confirmed that someone in my building must be moving the door pins, but all they did was post yet another notice (see photo) and send out an email blast.
In addition, they just recently posted that second notice about packages being stolen.
Although I live in a relatively safe neighborhood, I do not feel comfortable knowing that my building’s doors can be so easily unsecured. For some more context, a domestic incident occurred last year on the floor below mine where it sounded like someone was trying to forcefully get into an apartment. I called the police at the time and, although I don’t know exactly what happened, there were definitely people present who were not residents of my building.
In my most recent email, I suggested installing security cameras over the building entrances, especially in light of the package theft too. I have not heard back in a week. How do I go about getting this issue addressed moving forward? Should this be escalated?
