Loss of a pet during residency

Hey everyone. My family’s dog of 16 years passed away very recently. I’ve been having a difficult time coping with the loss, as he really was an integral part of our family and a very important part of my life/brought me a lot of joy over the years. I’m trying to not allow this to impact my work/performance as a resident and I’m hoping that work might be a good distraction, but it still does feel very heavy. Was wondering if others could speak to and share their experiences coping with the loss of their pet during residency/medical training and how they managed to get through those times, or anything that they found helpful during this process. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
