2024 NYRR Al Gordon 4M - Pre-Race Thread

NYRR Al Gordon 4M

First non-Central Park NYRR race of the year, time to head to Brooklyn and take on the hills of Prospect Park!

In memory of longtime NYRR board member Al Gordon who lived up to the NYRR motto "run for life" he ran his first Marathon at age 80 and walked for fitness until age 105!

Pre-Race

RACE INFORMATION

  • Date: Saturday, February 24th 2024
  • Start Time: 8:00AM
  • Location: Prospect Park, Brooklyn
    • Start/Finish: Center Drive
      • (old start line for NYC Half 2018-2022)
    • Bag Check: Race-Day Central
      • Last year it was a LONG bag check line already by 20-30mins before race and I got into corral with only a minute or so to spare, would recommend getting there early if checking a bag. (Part of that may have been the temperature it was very cold last year so in my case had a big warm jacket for the walk to/from the subway which needed to be checked.)
      • NYRR does have free clear bags at bib pick-up but you're planning if doing several races through the year consider getting a reusable clear bag smaller than 17" wide x 20" high x 7" deep: Drawstring or Tote or Backpack
  • Race distance: 4 Miles
  • Course:
    • Map
    • Description: Starts off relatively flat or even slightly down for a little less than a half mile on Center Drive until you turn left on to East Drive and start going up the fairly steep Battle Pass Hill until you hit the 1 Mile marker, this is the most challenging part of the course, it's a tough balance of pushing through the hill keeping pace while not frying your legs too early! (~80ft elevation at 3.4% incline) After you get to the top of the hill and around the turn at the north end of the park, Mile 2 is relatively flat until you get past the Bandshell you can start to ride West Drive downhill for a bit as you pass the 2 Mile marker on your way to the south end of Prospect Park where it get's mostly flat again going around the lake. Once you get toward the east side of the lake and go through the 3 Mile marker and the last water station, the East Drive uphill starts again, luckily this part of the uphill is not as steep as the earlier part of the race but at this point your legs are probably a little more tired so it still feels steep, push through that half mile or so of uphill until you turn left back onto center drive and then it's only about ~600 meters to the finish line to time your kick if you still have gas in the tank!
