2025 NYC Marathon - Interim marathon a bad idea?
Hi everyone!
I just completed my 2024 9+1 to qualify for the 2025 NYC Marathon, and after watching the race on Sunday, I’m beyond excited to start my training journey! Since the marathon is still 12 months away and this will be my first ever marathon, I’m considering signing up for an interim marathon (possibly the Jersey City Marathon in mid-April) as a practice run.
I know the NYC course is famously challenging, so I thought doing a trial marathon midway through the year could help me prepare mentally and physically for the distance. Does anyone have experience with running a “practice marathon” before their goal race? Is this a smart approach, or is it better to stick to shorter races like halves and focus on training in the 16 weeks before the actual NYC Marathon?
For context, I run a 1:45 half marathon and am aiming for a 3:45 finish at NYC. I also plan to work with a virtual running coach to guide my training. Would love to hear your advice or tips!
Thanks in advance!
