Low-Tech / DIY / No Photo Emulsion Screen Printing Methods
Hi everyone!
I’ve been exploring low-tech, DIY screen printing methods that don’t involve photo emulsion, and I wanted to ask for tips or advice.
I’m working on screen printing on paper for art purposes, so the designs will be highly graphic and text-based and not on shirts. I’m looking for methods that are quick, easy, and don’t require specialized or expensive equipment.
Here’s what I’ve come across so far:
Screen Filler + Non-UV Emulsion
• This method involves drawing directly onto the screen with screen filler and then filling the rest with non-UV-sensitive emulsion. While it works, it feels like it just replaces one problem (UV-sensitive emulsion) with another. Plus, it’s not great for fine details.
Vinyl Stencils
• Cutting out vinyl stencils and taping them to the back of the screen is another option. It’s durable and reusable, but it requires a vinyl cutter, which can be pricey.
Paper Stencils
• The most low-tech way I can think of is printing or drawing a design (e.g., shapes or text) in Illustrator, tracing it onto paper, cutting it out, and taping it to the screen. It’s super simple and cheap, but obviously, the paper doesn’t hold up for long once it gets wet.
I know there are other methods out there, but I haven’t tried them all yet. I’d love to hear if anyone has tried and tested methods that are low-tech, DIY-friendly, and don’t require a lot of faffing about with exposure units, emulsion, or expensive tools.
What’s worked for you? Any recommendations for quick, accessible techniques?
