Blondes in Scream
Blondes have been an important part of the Scream franchise from the beginning: starting with Drew Barrymore, who was promoted as the main heroine in the promo-campaign, only for us to be tricked by Craven as Casey lost her life within the first 15 minutes of the film, to the sixth installment where Samara Weaving played the now iconic role of the first victim, a role that is almost always portrayed by a blonde and well-known actress.
Blondes in Scream usually don't last long, often playing minor characters and almost always meeting a tragic end.
Examples:
Scream - Casey Becker and Tatum Riley are the only two blondes in the first movie of the series, and both die. Sidney and Gale survive: they both have brown hair.
Scream 2 - Movie Casey dies at the beginning (though we don’t really count her, since it’s a movie within a movie), and later Cici Cooper. Murphy (Portia de Rossi) survives, though she’s a minor character. Sidney and Gale survive as always, both non-blondes.
Scream 3 - Christine Hamilton dies at the very beginning, followed shortly after by Sarah Darling. No blonde survives.
Scream 4 - Marnie Cooper and Jenny Randall are killed in the opening, and later Kirby Reed (or so it’s implied). Judy Hicks, a blonde, survives.
Scream 5 - Judy Hicks is killed, along with her son Wes, who is also blond. However, in this installment, we learn that Kirby survived the attack 11 years earlier.
Scream 6 - Laura Crane dies in the opening. Kirby is one of the protagonists and survives.
Scream 7 - Among the new actresses are (at least) two blondes, both in what could be considered prominent roles: Isabel May as Sidney’s daughter, McKenna Grace in an unnamed but potentially important role.
Will Scream 7 bring a twist where blondes, who have usually been portrayed as victims, become the protagonists or killers?
That would be an interesting development.
