Getting called slurs
I’ve been serving for years and I recently worked for a steakhouse in upstate NY. At first everything was cool. Then I overheard a coworker calling a couple at a table fags, while they were in FOH. I’m gay, but it’s offensive either way. I told her that wasn’t appropriate and she flipped. She and her mother both worked there so it quickly became a problem with both of them.
*See bonus story below
They started calling me a faggot, once telling another server “I hate that fag”. I told management and they talked to both of them about it and it made now difference.
About a week later, the mother shouted a physical threat to me during rush hour. I told the manager on duty and he said we had to stop or he’d send BOTH of us home. Then management meets with me the next day to reprimand me for making problems during the dinner rush.
Two days later, the mother, daughter, AND HER SISTER (who doesn’t even work here) all show up to crowd me in the kitchen when I’m closing and it’s just me. The next day I requested management have someone walk me to my car each night.
I left after that but now I don’t have a recent reference on my applications. It sucks that I got burned when they were being homophobic.
BONUS STORY: Shortly after I confronted my her, I was called to the managers office. You see, the daughter was pregnant at the time. A week prior, we bumped into each other when rounding a corner.
So I get into the office and the mother is sitting there. She’s accusing me of trying to kill her daughter’s unborn baby by running into her (which only happened once). I’m shocked, knowing that her daughter smokes cigarettes on shift and drinks wine at the bar after shift. I couldn’t believe management was serious but I did get a warning. Bullshit.
